Congestion relief coming to Wellington with Kapiti Expressway on track for early finish

After decades of debate and almost 2½ years of watching the diggers and dump trucks do their thing, Kapiti’s new expressway is on pace to see its first car before Christmas.

The 540-strong project team is “pumped” to get the 18 kilometre, four-lane highway between McKays Crossing and Peka Peka, north of Wellington, open before the end of the year, project manager Alan Orange says.

“Earthworks are going to be finished towards the end of April, and right now, we’ve got work happening, concurrently, on more than 16 bridge sites. So a heck of a lot is happening,” he said.
