OPINION: We often hear how tough it is for young people to buy a house.

Prices have rocketed. Incomes haven’t.

But what if, in reality. things haven’t been this good for a long time?

I know, it’s basically sacrilege. But bear with me.

Massey University’s latest Home Affordability Report, which looks at prices compared to incomes and interest rates, shows affordability improved across New Zealand by 4.4 per cent over the past quarter.

House prices dropped 3.4 per cent nationwide and interest rates stayed low. Seven of the 13 regions it covers had improvements in affordability, led by Northland with 6.5 per cent.
