Despite having met the couple taking an extreme approach to securing a home in the city, it was still an eye-opener to watch the latest episode of Grand Designs NZ. It was especially interesting to see the build emerge from Auckland’s most famous hole in the ground, over five long years.

The Ponsonby high-rise in Vinegar Lane is Brendon Poole and Nikki Cliffe’s answer to their own housing crisis. They couldn’t find an affordable house they liked in the central city.

Brendon Poole and Nikki Cliffe didn’t fancy borrowing a lot of money to buy a villa in Ponsonby, so they borrowed more and built an entire apartment block. They are pictured outside their Vinegar Lane project with architect Chris Moller of Grand Designs.
