Petone’s oldest building has been demolished without any legal protection, and without even the presence of an archaeologist to record its history.

It is a situation described as “wilful neglect” by a local historian, who blames Hutt City Council.

A block of buildings, including the 1883 Oddfellows Hall on Petone Ave, was torn down this week to make way for 44 apartments and a shop.
