The cost of shelter

  • People on the verge of homelessness are racking up hundreds of dollars in debt with Work and Income after seeking help with emergency accommodation.

Some residents without a place to stay are checking into holiday parks and motels, and the costs are climbing.

Work and Income paid for the cost of the stay, but those struggling to find accommodation were required to pay the money back.



Emily Holder is paying back a $475 loan she got from the Ministry of Social Development to stay at a Blenheim holiday park.
