• Living remotely can put a household at the mercy of the weather, but not for the owners of this two-year-old eco house on farmland at Burke’s Pass between Fairlie and Tekapo.

If a decent snow storm takes out the power for a few days, it won’t matter because the house has its own electricity supply – the house is not, and probably never will be, connected to the national grid.

Owners John and Barbara Corcoran say they chose to build “off the grid” for a number of reasons, and the weather was one of them.

Buy this house and never get a power bill – the Corcoran’s house in Burke’s Pass is completely off the grid.
