Property managers who rent out properties that risk the health and safety of tenants are to be targeted by the Government.

Landlords are held liable for damages at Tenancy Tribunal hearings and the Tenancy Compliance and Investigations Team (TCIT) is funded to take over the worst cases of substandard rentals.

Paul Davies, senior operations adviser of the team at the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, said that would now extend to property managers and the team would knock on the doors of one in three companies to actively check if properties were meeting standards.
