Wellington apartment block

PHOTO: MONIQUE FORD/STUFF Wellingtonian Susan Price has gifted a block of flats – known as Chevening – to Heritage New Zealand to ensure her family’s 40-year legacy lives on.

Wellington woman Susan Price has taken the unusual step of giving away a lovingly restored landmark property.

Chevening, a block of four apartments at 90 Salamanca Rd – just across the road from Victoria University – has long been a piece of the city’s architectural history and now, thanks to Price, will be owned and maintained by Heritage New Zealand, in a gesture the organisation has called “unprecedented”.

Giving the building away, rather than selling it and distributing the proceeds, was a deeply personal choice for Price but one she said had been 40 years in the making.
