New Zealand rugby legend Richie McCaw and former Gemma McCaw are selling their luxury Christchurch home, giving buyers a rare opportunity to secure a high-end property in one of the city’s most sought-after suburbs.
The couple’s architect-designed residence at 24A Jacksons Road in Fendalton has been listed for sale ahead of an auction scheduled for March 19.
The move comes after the high-profile sporting couple relocated their family to Wānaka, embracing a new lifestyle in Central Otago.
🏠 A $3M+ Architectural Home in Prestigious Fendalton
The four-bedroom home sits on a private 1047sqm rear section, offering a combination of luxury, space and privacy rarely found in Christchurch’s established suburbs.
Property records show the house last sold in 2021 for $3.25 million, and it now carries a rateable value of more than $3 million.
The property was designed by architect David Sheppard of Sheppard and Rout Architects and completed in 2014.
Key features of the home include:
🛏️ Four bedrooms including an upstairs master suite with ensuite
🏊 In-ground swimming pool
🏀 Basketball hoop
🌳 Large landscaped grounds
🚪 Private tree-lined driveway entrance
🏡 Multiple living areas

✨ Designer Kitchen and Open-Plan Living
One of the standout elements of the home is its designer kitchen, created by award-winning interior designer Ingrid Geldof.
The kitchen features dark cabinetry paired with a striking white island bench and includes a hidden butler’s pantry for additional storage and functionality.
The kitchen flows seamlessly into the open-plan dining and living areas, with large sliding doors connecting the interior spaces to the outdoor garden and entertainment areas.
A separate second living room includes a gas fireplace, offering a comfortable retreat during colder months.
🌳 A Private Family Sanctuary
According to Cameron Bailey, the Harcourts Gold listing agent handling the sale, the property has proven to be an exceptional family home.
Bailey said the McCaws had enjoyed living in the property and its location for the past five years.
“They’ve loved living there and they’ve loved the location,” he said.
The home’s position down a long driveway adds an extra layer of privacy, while the large land size makes it particularly attractive to families seeking space.
“With over 1000sqm of land, it’s a big family home with plenty of privacy,” Bailey said.
The swimming pool was also a later addition to the property, further enhancing its lifestyle appeal.

📍 Why Fendalton Remains One of Christchurch’s Top Suburbs
Fendalton continues to rank among Christchurch’s most desirable residential areas thanks to its:
✔ Large sections and established homes
✔ Close proximity to the city centre
✔ Access to leading public and private schools
✔ Quiet tree-lined streets
These factors have helped cement the suburb’s reputation as one of the city’s premium property markets.
🏔️ The McCaws’ Move to Wānaka
The listing follows the McCaw family’s decision to relocate from Christchurch to Wānaka.
In late 2024, Gemma McCaw shared the news on social media, describing the move as the start of a new chapter.
“For the past 10 years Christchurch has been my home,” she wrote.
“It’s where we welcomed our three beautiful girls into the world and where I arrived knowing only a handful of people but now leave with lifelong friends.”
The move reflects the family’s shift towards a lifestyle centred around adventure and the outdoors in Central Otago.
