Australian rock legend Jimmy Barnes has built more than an iconic music career. Over the decades, the Cold Chisel frontman has quietly assembled an impressive property portfolio estimated at around $20 million, spanning country estates, industrial warehouses and landmark homes across New South Wales.
The 70-year-old singer, who rose from a difficult childhood in Adelaide to become one of Australia’s most successful musicians, has transformed decades of chart-topping success into significant real estate investments alongside his wife, Jane.
A Southern Highlands Sanctuary
Barnes and his family now call “Riverbend” home, a picturesque estate overlooking the Wingecarribee River near Berrima in the NSW Southern Highlands.
Purchased in 2008 for $1.85 million, the property features sandstone pavilions connected by wide verandas, beautifully established gardens and extensive vegetable plots. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Barnes embraced gardening, an experience that inspired the couple’s collaborative book Seasons Where The River Bends.
The tranquil property has become the family’s primary residence and a welcome retreat from the spotlight.
Botany Industrial Warehouse
Barnes has also owned a unique industrial warehouse complex in Botany, Sydney.
Purchased in 2004, the converted warehouse featured soaring six-metre ceilings and a professional recording studio where the Jane Barnes Band was formed.
The property was placed on the market in 2021 with expectations of achieving more than $4 million, while the couple also sold adjoining investment warehouses nearby.
In 2021, Barnes listed his chic industrial warehouse compound in Botany for more than $4m.
Originally purchased in 2004, the property featured six-metre ceilings and a recording studio.
The Famous Mittagong Mansion
During the 1980s and early 1990s, the Barnes family lived in a grand white mansion on Mount Gibraltar, Mittagong.
The estate featured:
- Tennis court
- Swimming pool
- Extensive entertaining areas
- A purpose-built recording studio reportedly worth $750,000
The property was sold in 1994 for $1.41 million when the family temporarily relocated to France.
Humble Beginnings
Long before the multimillion-dollar homes, Barnes grew up in Elizabeth, South Australia, in a modest working-class household.
Those early years would later inspire his autobiography and his famous album Working Class Man, a title that has become synonymous with his public image.

Family Story
Barnes’ family life has also attracted significant public interest over the years.
He is the father of eight children, including television personality and entertainer David Campbell, whose relationship with Barnes became public after Campbell discovered as a child that the musician was his biological father.
In recent years Barnes has also publicly acknowledged daughters Amanda Bennett, Megan Torzyn and, most recently, Katy Lee Carroll, a Coffs Harbour real estate agent, after privately building relationships with them.
Today the extended Barnes family regularly celebrates milestones together and several members have performed alongside the Australian music legend.
