December 29th marks the five-year anniversary of the skiing accident that shattered the life of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher .

The seven-time world champion suffered a severe brain injury after falling whilst skiing with his 14 year-old son at Meribel in the French Alps in 2013.

He was brought out of a medically-induced coma in April the following year but has shown only a slow rate of recovery, and a family lawyer reported in September 2016 that the former champion was still unable to walk or speak.

Since being released from hospital he has continued his recovery at his home in Switzerland, but the family have been understandably reluctant to publicise details of Schumacher’s health in the years since.
