Just 18 months ago Donald Gordon was going through a heartbreaking house sale.

After 10 years, he was nearing completion on the house he was building himself in the Kaiti countryside near Gisborne. But a breakup meant he could no longer afford to finish the project.

Then his life changed for the better. His house sold at auction to a buyer sight unseen – a Raglan man, Andrew Meek, who just happened to be at the auction rooms with his niece who was looking to buy a different property. And Andrew was only there because his trip home had been delayed by a slip in the gorge. It was also fortuitous that he happened to have seen a story on Stuff about the impending sale.
