Whangārei residents opposed to a state housing subdivision have little choice but to accept it, with the mayor saying it meets a desperate housing need.

Housing New Zealand has been granted consent to build 37 houses in the suburb of Maunu, on land it owns next to popular Puriri Park.

The community has spent more than a year fighting the plans, with concerns about the loss of amenity from the park, the density of the housing and the impact on the already congested roads.

Despite about 98 per cent of the 356 submitters being opposed to the subdivision, independent commissioners approved the plans on behalf of Whangārei District and Northland Regional Councils earlier this month.
