Judith Collins says Housing New Zealand is buying up Auckland homes so quickly first and second-home buyers are being crowded out of the market.

In a tense select committee hearing on Wednesday, the National Party’s housing spokeswoman alleged the state housing agency has a sweetheart deal with real estate agents where it is able to purchase some houses before they even make it to the market, and pushing up prices in the process.

HNZ purchased 249 existing homes to turn into state homes in the last financial year, while building 838 new ones.
