A Wellington community group has gone to the Court of Appeal to try to force a rethink of a $500 million plan to develop Shelly Bay.

The Miramar Peninsula site was historically used by the Defence Force and a design guide already recognises the unique character of the coastal location across the harbour from central Wellington.

The Wellington Company and the Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust plan to build hotels, 350 apartments and townhouses, a rest home, a ferry terminal, a marina and a cable car link to Mt Crawford.
