It was a combination of curiosity and concern that prompted Hawke’s Bay architectural designer Melissa Burne and her team to build a container house.

Burne, founder of Architecture and Interiors Ltd., was buying coffee with a colleague at one of those cafes operating from a shipping container in December 2017 when the idea struck her.

“There’s been a lot of talk about shipping container houses in recent years. I’d always had questions around whether they were as good as was being made out, or if they could be built well and compliant at a low price. I had my doubts,” she said.
