It was 10.30am on Wednesday and real estate agent Chris Downie was anxious. He’d just rung prospective purchasers of the three-level waterfront house at Northbridge to warn them that the 6pm auction might not go ahead due to legal action.

A last-minute bid to stop the sale had been launched in the Supreme Court by the previous owner, Anthony James Dickson, who appeared in court by an audio-visual link owing to his current abode being Cooma jail, a favoured lock-up for white-collar criminals including insider trader Oliver Curtis and union boss Michael Williamson.
