Pepin Island

PHOTO: SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL Luxury real estate agents, Sotheby’s International, says it has had regular inquiries from around the world about Pepin Island near Nelson city, which went on the market for $16 million in December.

Should a $16 million privately-owned island close to Nelson city be returned to local ownership, and if so how?

Nelson mayor Rachel Reese is weighing up the options as Pepin Island, a 25-minute drive north-east of central Nelson, continues to attract inquiries from potential buyers across the globe.

The 518-hectare island, which includes three tourist chalets, a farm and 1900 sheep, was put on the market in December by US-based owner Olivia Hallman.
