A warning for those who want to try a career in real estate sales – it might be a lot harder than you expect.

Many people are attracted to the prospect of selling houses by the relatively low bar for entry and the chance to make large amounts of money.

Salespeople are usually paid purely on commission, and their earning potential increased over recent years as property prices did.

At Auckland’s median property price, real estate commissions take about $25,000 from each sale – the individual salesperson can take up to 70 per cent of that.
