Chinese students were wrongly banned from using an electric fan and threatened with fines for visitors using their kitchen by their landlord, a tribunal has ruled.

Landlords Xinglin and Helen Chen are refusing to pay a $1769 compensation award made against them in May, in what the partner of one of their former tenants claims is an issue affecting many international students. He believes “something has to change”.

The wide array of fines levied in the Chinese-language tenancy agreement included $100 fines “every time” tenants used an electric heater, electric blanket or electric fan, according to a Tenancy Tribunal judgment handed down in May.
