A landlord has been ordered to pay nearly $10,000 to her former tenant after renting out a damp, mouldy house with a lounge that smelled so much it was unable to be used.

Dianne Dixon rented her home in the upmarket Auckland suburb of Remuera to Pranita Lal from May 2017 to October 2018.

The house has a current rateable value of $2.8 million, according to Auckland Council figures.

However, according to a June Tenancy Tribunal decision, the house was mouldy and damp. The carpet in the lounge smelled so strongly that “the room was unable to be used throughout the entirety of [the] tenancy”.
