“I Never Thought I’d Own A Home At My Age”
A young Australian woman says moving more than 1,500km away from Sydney completely transformed her financial future — allowing her to buy a beachside home, land her dream job and save $1,000 a week.
Macy Hope, now 20, says she struggled to survive financially while renting in Sydney and working retail jobs after finishing school. But after relocating to regional Tasmania with her husband Lachie, she says her life changed dramatically.
The story highlights a growing trend of young Australians leaving major cities in search of cheaper housing, better lifestyle opportunities and improved financial security.

Sydney Housing Costs Pushing Young Aussies Out
Like many young Australians, Macy found it nearly impossible to get ahead financially while living in Sydney.
Despite studying to become a high school teacher since graduating in 2023, she struggled to secure work in the education sector and instead relied on retail and casual jobs to survive.
“I was struggling to get a job on the mainland, because the schools are just so busy; so many people, so many people trying to get jobs,” she said.
At the same time, Sydney’s skyrocketing housing market left home ownership feeling completely unattainable.
“So I just kind of removed that dream,” she admitted.

A 1,500km Move Changed Everything
After her now-husband Lachie proposed, Macy agreed to move to Tasmania without hesitation.
The couple relocated to Hellyer, a tiny town on Tasmania’s northwest coast with fewer than 200 residents.
The slower pace of life immediately delivered financial benefits.
Being located around 45 minutes from major shopping centres and restaurants meant far fewer opportunities for unnecessary spending.
“You just spend your money on the necessities and not all these other little things here and there,” Macy explained.
The result has been extraordinary savings compared to Sydney living costs.
According to Macy, the couple now saves approximately $1,000 every week.

Landing A Dream Teaching Job In Tasmania
The move also opened career opportunities Macy says simply did not exist for her in Sydney.
After making one connection and sending an email, she landed a role at a Tasmanian school working as a principal’s personal assistant and teacher’s aide.
“It’s crazy how I landed that job. I could not land that job on the mainland,” she said.
The experience is now helping her gain valuable hands-on skills within the education sector while building financial stability at the same time.

Perhaps the most remarkable part of Macy’s story is that the move enabled her and her husband to purchase a beachside home — something she once thought would never happen.
The couple bought an older family-style home with beach access for around $400,000.
“Not in a million years would I ever be able to buy a home in Sydney at my age,” Macy said.
She added that the mortgage repayments are roughly equivalent to what she had previously been paying in rent while house hunting in Tasmania.
“It’s literally the best thing ever,” she said of the property.
Regional Living Becoming More Popular
Macy’s story reflects a broader shift occurring across Australia as younger people increasingly leave expensive major cities in favour of regional lifestyles.
Soaring property prices in Sydney and Melbourne have pushed many first-home buyers toward:
- Tasmania
- Regional Queensland
- South Australia
- Regional Victoria
- Western Australia
The appeal includes:
- Lower house prices
- Better work-life balance
- Reduced living costs
- Less congestion
- Improved lifestyle opportunities
For many young Australians, remote work and labour shortages in regional areas have made relocation far more achievable than in previous generations.
Financial Security And A Slower Lifestyle
Beyond financial benefits, Macy says the move has also improved her overall wellbeing and future outlook.
The couple now feels more secure about eventually raising children in Tasmania compared with Sydney.
Despite missing the hot New South Wales summers, Macy says she has fallen in love with Tasmania’s quieter lifestyle, mountains and slower pace.
“There’s not much more I can want,” she said.
For many struggling young Australians watching house prices continue climbing in major cities, her story may offer a glimpse of an alternative path to financial freedom and home ownership.
