🎉 IT’S FINALLY HERE: IKEA OPENS IN AUCKLAND THIS THURSDAY

After years of hype, countless delays, and endless “When is IKEA coming?” questions, the Swedish retail giant will officially open its first New Zealand store on:

🗓 Thursday, 4 December
📍 Sylvia Park, Auckland

IKEA management is expecting 15,000 to 20,000 visitors on opening day alone — meaning Aucklanders should brace for major delays, long queues and packed carparks.

RNZ was invited inside on Monday for a first look at the 34,000 sqm megastore — and it’s every bit as colourful, quirky and overwhelming as Kiwis hoped.

🛋️ WHAT IT’S LIKE INSIDE – A FULL IKEA EXPERIENCE

The moment shoppers walk in, they’re greeted with the classic IKEA formula:

  • Full staged rooms (lounges, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, patios)

  • IKEA’s trademark bright colours

  • Every item labelled with prices + Swedish names

  • Fake veggies in the fridge and fake meat on the BBQ (yes, really)

  • Two full levels of showrooms, marketplace, and flatpack aisles

And for the foodies?
🍽 The Swedish restaurant is open — including famous IKEA meatballs.
(You can even buy take-home bags of them.)

Customers are encouraged to download the IKEA app to navigate the massive two-storey layout and find where to pick up their flatpacks.

🚗 TRAFFIC WARNING: EXPECT MASSIVE DELAYS

Auckland Transport and NZTA have issued strong warnings for anyone travelling to Sylvia Park or through Mt Wellington on Thursday.

Expect:

🚦 40-minute traffic delays

🅿️ Up to an hour wait for parking

🚶 Heavy congestion around Mt Wellington Highway

🚆 Large commuter crowds at Sylvia Park Train Station

ATOC (Auckland Transport + NZTA) will:

  • Actively manage traffic lights

  • Reroute vehicles where possible

  • Have staff at Sylvia Park Station to direct crowds

AT says delays could last weeks or even months as the excitement continues.

Peak congestion expected:
📍 Weekday peak hours
📍 Saturdays 1pm–4pm
📍 Northbound traffic from South Auckland to Mt Wellington

🧍‍♂️🧍‍♀️ HOW TO AVOID THE CHAOS

IKEA NZ Manager Johanna Cederlöf has a simple message:

“Take public transport if you can.”

And for those outside Auckland — or who don’t want to battle the crowds:
🛒 Online shopping opens at midnight for New Zealanders.

  • 🅿️ Carpark opens: 8:30am

  • 🚫 Anyone arriving earlier will be asked to leave (safety reasons)

  • 🏬 IKEA store opens: 11:00am

Cederlöf says the later store opening time is deliberate:

“We chose 11am to avoid the morning work traffic.”

  • 🏬 Store open daily: 9:00am – 9:00pm

  • 🅿️ Carpark & queue open: 7:30am

The scale of the store is huge — and it’s built to keep crowds flowing.
