PHOTO: A Grave Mystery More Than 20 Years After His Death. NZ HISTORY
One of New Zealand’s most recognisable political figures has become the centre of an unusual and emotional mystery.
More than two decades after former Prime Minister David Lange was laid to rest, his headstone and ashes have quietly disappeared from the Auckland cemetery where he was buried — leaving members of his own family shocked and searching for answers.
Lange, who served as New Zealand’s Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989, died in 2005 at the age of 63 following complications related to renal failure and blood disease.
His ashes were buried at Waikaraka Park Cemetery in Ōnehunga, marked by a simple headstone engraved with the words:
“David Lange 1942 – 2005.”
But today, that headstone is gone.
Family Shocked by the Disappearance
The mysterious removal of the memorial came as a surprise even to members of Lange’s own family.
His younger brother Peter Lange, a respected artist and ceramicist, said he had visited the gravesite only months ago and had no idea the ashes and headstone had been removed.
He described learning about the removal as upsetting.
Peter had visited the cemetery several times over the years to pay his respects, including a visit late last year when the headstone was still in place.
When contacted about the situation, he reportedly returned to the cemetery to confirm the news for himself.
For him, the sudden absence of the grave marker felt deeply personal.

The Widow Requested the Headstone’s Removal
While the disappearance initially raised questions, Auckland Council has confirmed there was nothing suspicious about the situation.
Officials say the headstone was removed at the request of Lange’s widow, Margaret Pope, who held the burial rights.
Council representatives confirmed that:
Lange’s ashes were removed some time ago
The headstone itself was removed more recently
However, Pope has declined to reveal where Lange’s ashes have been relocated.
She has also said the matter is private.
A Burial Place Chosen for Personal Reasons
At the time of his death, Lange had chosen Waikaraka Park Cemetery as his final resting place for sentimental reasons.
According to family members, the location was significant because it overlooked the area where he once lived.
For many who knew him, the cemetery location carried emotional importance.
That is why the removal of the grave marker — without broader family consultation — has created tension among some relatives.
An Icon of New Zealand Politics
David Lange remains one of the most influential figures in modern New Zealand political history.
As the country’s 32nd Prime Minister, he led the Labour Government during a transformative period in the 1980s.
His time in office is remembered for major economic reforms and for establishing New Zealand as a nuclear-free nation, a move that gained international attention.
Lange was also known for his sharp wit, powerful speaking ability and charismatic leadership style.
His famous Oxford Union debate defending New Zealand’s anti-nuclear stance remains one of the defining moments of his political career.
A Memorial Still Stands in His Hometown
Despite the disappearance of his cemetery headstone, Lange’s legacy is still recognised publicly.
A dedicated David Lange Memorial stands in Ōtāhuhu, the suburb where he was born.
The memorial commemorates his political achievements and his influence on New Zealand’s national identity.
For some family members, that public tribute continues to honour his life even as questions remain about the location of his ashes.
A Private Decision With Public Curiosity
Although the situation has stirred public interest, authorities say the removal of ashes and memorial plaques is permitted when requested by the burial rights holder.
Unlike full body exhumations, which require formal approval from health authorities, the removal of cremated remains is governed through council permits.
In this case, the process was carried out legally.
Still, the unusual disappearance of the grave of one of New Zealand’s most prominent political leaders has left many wondering exactly where David Lange now rests.
For now, that answer remains known only to a very small circle.
And perhaps, as his brother reflected, the famously witty former Prime Minister might even be amused by the mystery.
