Sydney FISH Market

After years of planning, construction, delays and anticipation, Sydney’s biggest ever seafood destination has opened its doors — and now you can see inside the new Sydney Fish Market at Blackwattle Bay.

More than just a trading floor for fresh seafood, this waterfront renewal project has transformed the way Sydneysiders and visitors experience food, community and harbour front living.

🗓️ A Milestone Opening: What’s Finally Happening

The new Sydney Fish Market officially opens on 19 January 2026, replacing the old site in Pyrmont and marking a major milestone in the ongoing Blackwattle Bay urban renewal.

For decades the Fish Market has been a Sydney icon — a working seafood hub and tourist destination — but the new iteration moves far beyond the old wholesale hall, bringing together:

  • 🐠 A massive public seafood hall with fresh fishmongers

  • 🍤 Over 40 restaurants, cafés and bars under one roof

  • 🍷 Waterfront dining with harbour views

  • 🍽️ Specialty retailers, delis, and culinary experiences

  • 👩‍🍳 A Sydney Seafood School and immersive food zones

The project is expected to draw more than six million visitors annually — more than double the foot traffic of the old site.

🏛️ A Stunning Architectural Statement

Designed by renowned Danish architects 3XN in collaboration with Sydney firms BVN and Aspect Studios, the Sydney Fish Market is as much a piece of architecture as it is a marketplace.

The most striking feature is its wave-shaped roof, sweeping across Blackwattle Bay like a giant fish scale — a nod to Sydney’s maritime heritage and harbour conditions.

Inside, the market hall is bright, spacious and circular in flow, allowing visitors to:

  • Watch live seafood auctions

  • Wander between working stalls and public areas without disruption

  • Enjoy clear sightlines across the entire hall

  • Feel connected to the harbour through glazing and open walkways

Mass timber and sustainable design elements have been incorporated throughout, with timber roof structures and daylight channels bringing warmth and ventilation to the space.

🍽️ What’s Inside — From Fish Auctions to Fine Dining

Stepping inside the new market you’ll find a rare blend of:

  • 🎣 Traditional wholesale fishmongers selling fresh catch daily

  • 🦪 Specialty seafood retail outlets

  • 🍱 Cultural eateries featuring both local and international cuisine

  • 🍷 Waterfront bars and casual dining zones

  • 👨‍🍳 Cooking classes and collective food experiences

Whether you’re after locally caught oysters at dawn or a waterfront dinner at sunset, the market delivers an experience that’s market roots and modern lifestyle equally balanced.

🚶‍♂️ Connectivity & Public Realm

One of the biggest changes from the old market is how seamlessly the new precinct interacts with the city’s harbourfront:

  • A continuous waterfront promenade links Blackwattle Bay to Rozelle Bay and beyond

  • New pedestrian and cycle paths connect to Sydney’s growing foreshore network

  • Public plazas and open spaces make it a destination even outside seafood hours

Future infrastructure, including a planned ferry wharf and improved transport access, will further enhance connectivity across Sydney Harbour.
