⚠️ Major Privacy Error Exposes Tenant Details
Kāinga Ora has accidentally leaked the email addresses of more than 1000 tenants, after a group message was mistakenly sent out by the state housing agency on Monday.
Regional director Taina Jones confirmed the error, saying no other personal data was exposed — but acknowledged the serious nature of the privacy breach.
“The email addresses of more than 1000 customers were mistakenly shared in a group email. No other personal information or data was released,” Jones said in a statement.
She added that Kāinga Ora had notified the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and was contacting all affected tenants directly to apologise.

💬 Tenants Frustrated and Concerned
One West Auckland tenant, who asked to remain anonymous, said the situation quickly spiralled out of control.
They received an email from Kāinga Ora asking how they preferred to get future correspondence — by mail or email — only to later be bombarded with replies from hundreds of other tenants who had been copied into the same message.
“You can see everyone’s replies, their email addresses, even personal details about people asking for homes or sharing private issues,” the tenant said.
They also described inboxes filling up fast, making it difficult to receive important emails.
“People’s email boxes are being filled up in blocks, so we can’t actually receive our normal everyday emails that we need for paying bills or work.”
🔒 Kāinga Ora Responds
The tenant said their case manager personally contacted them on Tuesday to apologise and confirmed that Kāinga Ora was working to stop further replies within the system.
“They said they’re trying to make internal system changes to stop people from replying to that email chain,” the tenant added.
Kāinga Ora has yet to provide further comment on how the breach occurred or whether disciplinary action will follow.

🧩 Background: Previous Privacy Concerns
This is not the first time a government agency has faced scrutiny for mishandling tenant data. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner has repeatedly warned public sector organisations to strengthen data management and email systems to prevent group-mail errors.
As Kāinga Ora manages more than 70,000 public housing properties, the incident raises serious questions about data security and internal communication protocols.
📱 What Happens Next
Kāinga Ora has assured tenants that no financial or identification data was included in the leaked message. The agency says it is tightening procedures and reviewing its email protocols to ensure this type of error does not happen again.
The Privacy Commissioner is expected to review the report once submitted by Kāinga Ora.
